Question

Can ID mobile do anything to prevent automated calls in Chinese?

In the last month I have been getting 5 or more calls a day from UK numbers, either in Mandarin, or stating in English it is the Royal Mail, NHS etc. and giving an option to hear the message in Mandarin. I have Google screening all calls and am blocking them once I establish they are scam calls, but the numbers keep changing several times a day.

Is there anything ID mobile can do to identify and block these calls? I am registered on the TPS, but would have to submit reports to them 5 or more times a day.

Hi @EastofEngland

Thank you for reaching out.

We're sorry to hear that you've been receiving such a high volume of scam calls. We understand how frustrating and disruptive this must be.

Unfortunately, as your mobile network provider, we're unable to identify, filter, or block scam calls before they reach your handset. Scammers frequently change the numbers they call from (a practice known as number spoofing), which makes it very difficult to block them at network level.

You're already taking the right steps by using Google's Call Screening feature and blocking the numbers after they call. We would also recommend:

  • Continuing to report nuisance and scam calls to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) where appropriate.
  • Never providing personal or financial information to unexpected callers.
  • Keeping your handset software up to date, as manufacturers regularly improve spam call detection.
  • Enabling any built-in Spam Protection or Caller ID & Spam features available on your handset.

We appreciate that this isn't the answer you were hoping for, and we're sorry that we're unable to prevent these calls from reaching your phone.
