I am an expat and need a UK number (so without switching from a different provider)

Hi, I am looking to buy a UK SIM and number (as part of a new contract) but as far as I understand when I go to do so the only options I am given include switching from an old provider, which I cannot do as I do not have one. Is there any way for me to do it? Is there anyone from customer service I could speak to about this?
