Just recently joined ID mobile but want to switch to a monthly phone plan?

Hello. A few days ago I switched to ID mobile on a sim only plan. Then my wife asked me to get her a monthly phone contract so I applied for one with ID but was rejected. My wife applied with her details and was rejected too. I have to wait 90 days before I can take another contract.

The thing is I'm still within my 14 day cooling period. I spoke to live chat who weren't very helpful. I asked them can I cancel my current sim plan and rejoin ID on a monthly phone and sim plan, or can I simply add or upgrade my plan. I also asked them if I would be accepted if I cancelled my sim only or if I would be blacklisted and out of offers.

The logical path is buy a new sim and change number to preserve it. Cancel within 14 days the ID sim only plan. I just don't want to go through all this hassle and the be rejected and have to find a different provider.

The chat agent offered to cancel my contract but gave conflicting advice if I could get a new contract. First saying he could do it then saying no I need to wait 90 days.

Im sure there is a much simpler solution to all this. Im just looking to add a phone contract and I dont mind either keeping or giving up my current contract. I'm willing to even pay off 50% as a deposit of the entire 24 month contract. It seems ID would rather lose a customer than let me make a change in the first 14 days.

Hi @MohammedR

thanks for explaining everything so clearly and I’m really sorry for the confusion you’ve had from chat. I can see why this feels like you’re being blocked at every turn.

I’m going to be upfront with you so you don’t go through any unnecessary hassle.

❗ What’s actually stopping you

The issue here isn’t your current SIM-only plan it’s the credit check decision.

  • When a handset contract application is declined, there is a 90-day wait before another application can be accepted
  • This applies to you and your wife individually, based on your personal credit assessments
  • Cancelling your current plan, opening a new account, or changing SIMs won’t reset or bypass this

I completely understand why you were trying to find a workaround it seems logical but in this case it won’t change the outcome.

🔄 About cancelling within 14 days

You are absolutely right:

  • You’re within your cooling-off period
  • You can cancel your SIM-only plan without an early termination fee (just pay for any usage)

However:

👉 Cancelling will not improve your chances of being accepted for a handset contract right now

🚫 About trying again another way

Just to be really clear (so you don’t waste time):

  • Buying a new SIM and reapplying → will still result in a decline
  • Applying in a different name at the same address → still subject to credit checks
  • Offering to pay a large upfront amount → not something iD Mobile can use to override a decline

There’s no blacklist for cancelling — but the 90-day application cooldown is firm.

💡 Your realistic options
✔️ Option 1: Keep your SIM-only plan (recommended)

  • Continue using your current plan
  • Reapply for a handset after 90 days

✔️ Option 2: Get a phone another way

If you need a handset now:

  • Buy one outright, or
  • Use a retailer offering separate finance (not tied to iD)

Then just use it with your current SIM

My honest recommendation

To avoid more frustration:

👉 Keep your current SIM-only plan for now
👉 Reapply after the 90-day period

Or, if you need a phone immediately, go for a separate purchase and use your SIM.
