upgrade choices vs new customers

Hi,

My wife and I are due upgrades. Both have a pixel 7a. 

Yesterday I went to upgrade:

 

I got a pixel 9a via the app. It's coming tomorrow. 

I did the same for my wife. Or I thought I did. 

Checked today and she has no confirmation email so I went on the app and mustn't have finalised it.…

 

Anyway: can no longer get a 9a as an upgrade! Only 24 hours later. 

However, you can get a 9a on ID if you are new customer?

 

What's this about then? 

 

What's stopping us just getting a new deal as a new customer and porting the number over?
