I tried to buy it via the ID mobile website but it doesnt allow me to proceed without entering a valid UK telephone number.
Seems I cant do it online and will have to go to a physical store.

You’ll still need 3 years of UK address history in order to make a purchase for a contract so even if you’re able to purchase a PAYG SIM for a UK number, you’ll still be unable to purchase a contract due to the credit check.
You can use the PAYG SIM as a Pay&Go type which would cost 3p per minute, 2p per text and 1p per MB of data, or, you can purchase bundles each month.
These would be:
£5.00 - 500MB Data, 150 Minutes, Unlimited Texts
£10.00 - 4GB Data, 500 Minutes, Unlimited Texts
£15.00 - 8GB Data, 1000 Minutes, Unlimited Texts
PAYG SIMs do not require a credit check so can be purchased without this.
You can then purchase a contract SIM-only once you’re eligible with 3 years of UK address history.

To be honest the only option for you is to get Pay as You Go SIM Card as Pay Monthly Deals require 3 years of a valid UK address for credit check purposes. You can buy pay as you go SIM Card in any Carphone Warehouse store or order online on iD Mobile website.
