Calling a UK number Abroad from the UK

Hi,

My friend is travelling to Sweden for a few days. I understand that he will be able to use his allowances to call me or text me as he has roaming set up on his plan.

However, what I can’t seem to find an answer for is, will me calling my friend using his UK number come out of my free minutes?

Thanks

Hi @SmartPants

Roaming/International charges are determined by the connection (physical location/network) even when using a UK registered number in another country.

This is the information given (from AI internet search results) with regards to your question:-

Calling a UK-registered mobile number that is currently in Sweden from your UK iD Mobile phone is treated as international calling. It is NOT considered "roaming," so it will not use your inclusive EU roaming allowance. Charges apply: typically £0.18 per minute for calls and £0.06 per text.
Key Considerations
  • Charges: You will be charged international rates for calling/texting a number that is not currently in the UK.
  • Cost: Standard iD Mobile international charges (approx. £0.18/min, £0.06/text) will apply, not the free EU roaming rates.
  • Solution: Use VoIP apps (like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Teams) over WiFi or your data to avoid these costs, which would then just consume your regular data allowance.
  • Receiving Calls: Receiving a call from the UK while you are abroad is generally free within the 50 "Roam Free" destinations, including Sweden.
It is recommended to set a Bill Cap to manage potential international call costs.
