Question

Can’t check voicemail from abroad

Hello,

I’m in the US right now and I received a text saying that I had a voicemail. The message says:

”You have 1 new Voicemail(s).

Call +447782333123 to listen.”

I called this number but it was an automated message saying I needed to set up a PIN to hear the voicemail. I don’t know where I would do this. It charged me for this call.

I then pressed the Voicemail button that’s on the right of the screen on an iPhone device when you click on the Phone icon and clicked Call Network Provider.

It had an automated message saying I was unable to make calls because I had a bill cap. I adjusted my bill cap and tried to call again but heard the same automated recording. I went back to the ID app to see that an additional £6 had been added to my bill, even though all I had were three 10-second-long automated robot responses. I am aware the call fee is £1.68 per minute from the US but my bill cap would have covered the length of the voicemail, but it won’t let me listen to the voicemail. Now I’ve wasted £5.04 on without being able to listen to the voicemail. It is from my doctor and I am waiting on important news regarding my health so I would like to be able to hear it, which I thought I would be able to do by calling the voicemail number provided. How can I actually access the voicemail? And I would like refunded for the failed ones.

Additionally, while in the UK I have my iMessages set so that I do not automatically send text messages or photo text messages when I have no signal since these are chargeable. Since being here, I’ve had extra charges added to my account due to messages being sent as texts rather than iMessages, which are covered by my eSIM. How do I turn this off?

    Hi @askingquestions,

I'm sorry to hear about this, especially given that you're waiting on important news from your doctor.

Unfortunately, voicemail needs to be fully set up, including a voicemail PIN, before travelling abroad. If a PIN wasn't set up while you were in the UK, you won't be able to access your voicemail messages from overseas.

If your voicemail was set up before you left, you'll need to ensure your bill cap is high enough to cover the roaming charges and access voicemail by dialling the international voicemail number: +44 7782 333 123

It's also worth noting that roaming in the USA is not included free of charge. Any calls, texts, voicemail access, or other chargeable services used while in the USA will incur charges. While you can purchase a roaming add-on for data, this only covers data usage. Calls, texts, and voicemail access would still be charged separately.

Regarding the charges you've incurred, the calls connected to the voicemail platform, which is why the charges have appeared on your bill even though you weren't able to access the message itself.

As for the text message charges, on iPhone you can prevent messages from automatically being sent as SMS when iMessage is unavailable by:

    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Tap Messages.
    3. Turn off "Send as SMS".

This will stop your iPhone from automatically switching to chargeable SMS messages when iMessage cannot be delivered.

If you're still unable to access your voicemail after increasing your bill cap and calling the international voicemail number, please contact our Live Chat team when convenient and they'll be able to review the voicemail setup on your account.
