Hi @222hwilliams,

Thanks for getting in touch.

No, the Canada roaming data pass only covers mobile data. Calls and texts aren't included and are chargeable.

The current charges are:

  • Calls to the UK: £6.00 per minute
  • Calls to Canadian numbers: £6.00 per minute
  • Receiving calls: £1.50 per minute
  • Sending and receiving texts: £1.20 per text

If you only need data while you're away, the roaming data pass is the right option. However, any calls or texts will be charged at the above rates.

Regards,

Hi @222hwilliams,

Thanks for getting in touch.

It depends on where you are travelling.

If you're in one of our inclusive EU roaming destinations, you can send and receive texts using your UK allowance, provided they're to or from UK numbers.

If you're travelling outside of our inclusive roaming destinations, such as Canada, then sending and receiving texts is chargeable at our standard roaming rates.

We also offer a Call Abroad Add-on, but this only applies when you're in the UK calling another country. It doesn't cover calls or texts made while you're abroad.

I will be away 13 days but you only do 10 days max? Does this mean I have to purchase again while away or get charged silly money? Can you also please confirm I could make WhatsApp or messenger calls using data only?

Hi @Twotoucans,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Yes, if you'll be away for 13 days, you'll either need to purchase another roaming add-on once the first one expires, or you'll be charged at our standard roaming rates if you continue using your iD Mobile services without an active add-on.

If you're planning to stay for longer than 10 days, it may be worth considering purchasing a local SIM instead, as this could work out to be a more cost-effective option.

You can also use apps such as WhatsApp and Messenger to make voice and video calls using your data allowance. Calls made through these apps use data rather than your inclusive minutes.

I do have another question... I am flying to Canada via Reykjavik, Iceland and will be there a few hours. Will need to contact Canada while there - via data not a call - then will be flying on to Canada same day. What do I need to purchase to enable me to use data in both on the same day? Even if I have access to free wi-fi at the airports, will i be charge roaming charges when I turn my phone on?

Hi @Twotoucans,

No problem at all!

As Iceland is one of our Inclusive Roaming destinations, you'll be able to use your UK data allowance there at no extra cost, so you won't need to purchase anything extra while you're waiting for your connecting flight.

Once you arrive in Canada, your inclusive roaming will no longer apply, so if you want to use mobile data there, you'll need one of our Roam Beyond data add-ons.

If you're landing in Canada on the same day, you can purchase the add-on while you're still in Iceland before boarding your connecting flight. Alternatively, once you arrive in Canada, you can connect to the airport's free Wi-Fi and purchase the add-on before using mobile data.

Even if you plan to use the airport's free Wi-Fi, we'd recommend setting your bill cap to £0.00 before you travel. This will help prevent any unexpected out-of-plan roaming charges if your phone connects to the mobile network.

If you're only planning to use WhatsApp or Messenger while connected to Wi-Fi, you won't be charged, as these use your Wi-Fi connection rather than the mobile network.

We hope you have a fantastic trip!
