Hi, has anyone any idea why I've been charged a LOT for roaming when I went to Turkey on holiday and I had my data turned off the whole time?

Cheers

Hi @Runga1978 ,

Thank you for getting in touch.

I’m sorry to hear about the unexpected roaming charges following your trip to Turkey. I appreciate this is concerning, especially if you believed your data was turned off during your visit.

To clarify, Turkey is classified as a non-inclusive roaming destination with iD Mobile. This means that charges can still be incurred not only from mobile data usage, but also from calls, texts, voicemail retrieval, and background network activity when your phone connects to a local network.

Even when mobile data is switched off, charges may still occur due to:

  • Automatic network registration when your phone connects to a Turkish network
  • Apps running in the background using data or refreshing when connected
  • Voicemail access or diverted calls
  • iMessage/WhatsApp or similar services activating over mobile networks if WiFi is unavailable
  • Emergency or network-initiated services (location updates, system checks)

We would recommend checking your itemised bill in the iD Mobile app to see a breakdown of the charges.

If you believe the usage does not reflect your activity, we can certainly raise this for a roaming usage review, however please note that charges are applied based on network usage records provided by the roaming partner and are generally accurate.

For future travel, we recommend:

  • Keeping data roaming switched off (which you did correctly)
  • Also switching the phone to Airplane Mode, then manually enabling WiFi only
  • Turning off automatic app updates and background data
  • Set bill CAP to £0 to avoid out of plan charges.
