Corfu - charged for switching to Albanian provider when network selection set to manual

My network selection was set to manual the instant I arrived in Corfu and Cosmote selected. On walking around a headland later in the week, I got a “Welcome to Albania” message followed almost immediately by a “Welcome to Greece message”. 20p was then added to my bill. I checked that my network selection wasn’t on automatic (it wasn’t) and changed my bill cap to zero. The same happened a number of times during my stay, but no further charges were added to my bill.

Why did I receive these messages at all and why was 20p added to my bill the first time?

Hi there @largeronald, sorry to hear that. To avoid extra roaming costs, we’d always advise to set your bill cap to £0.00, to ensure you’re not charged anything outside your normal plan, as you did once you received these messages.

It’s likely it is connected to the Albanian network first, and then connected to the Greek network straight after.

Thanks,

Tyler

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for your reply. No, it definitely didn’t connect to the Albanian network first. It connected to the Greek network at 12:54 on the 28th August, which is when we arrived in Corfu and the network selection was on manual. It didn’t connect to the Albanian network until the 30th August at 13:47, when 20p was charged to my account. The network selection was still on manual. At this point I changed my bill cap to zero, and although I got another 3 “Welcome to Albania” messages in the next 2 weeks, no further money was charged.

I was wondering why it would even attempt to connect to another network when the selection was on manual. It’s an iPhone 15, by the way.

Regards,

largeronald.
