Data roaming cap not applied

Recently visited USA and bought the 5 day data roaming add-on. I have the data roaming cap of £45 set up. Came home to a £120 bill 😯

I want to understand why the £45 cap wasn't applied - I received text messages to say I had used 80% of the £45 cap. Yet still a huge bill. Why is that id mobile?

Hi @Frustrated member

Thanks for getting in touch, and I’m really sorry to hear this I completely understand how alarming it must be to come back from your trip expecting one thing and see a £120 bill instead.

📌 Why this can happen

Even when a £45 roaming cap is set, it only applies to standard out-of-plan usage charges.

However, a higher bill can still occur if:

  • Multiple roaming charges were applied (e.g. data, calls, texts separately)
  • Charges were incurred before the add-on fully activated
  • Any usage occurred outside the add-on coverage rules
  • The add-on was used up and further usage continued at standard roaming rates

The warning texts you received (like reaching 80% of £45) confirm that chargeable usage was still being tracked outside of the add-on allowance, which is why the cap alerts triggered but it doesn’t always stop all roaming cost types automatically in real time.

🔍 What we need to do next

To give you a clear breakdown of exactly what happened on your account (and why the final total reached £120), we’ll need to review your itemised roaming usage and how the add-on was applied.

For this, please contact our Live Chat team so they can investigate your bill in detail: 💬 https://www.idmobile.co.uk/live-chat

They’ll be able to:

  • Break down every roaming charge
  • Confirm how the £45 cap was applied
  • Check when the add-on started and ended
  • And explain exactly what caused the remaining balance
