Is tethering while roaming abroad permitted?

Is tethering (hotspot) permitted while roaming abroad? There is no clear information on this on the website. The question seems to have last been answered 11 months ago and the answer was that it was permitted and not choked. However, I've just returned from a trip abroad (EU countries) and was unable to use hotspot. What is the up to date policy on this and why is it obfuscated in published terms? Many thanks.

    Hi @GRK,

Yes, tethering (personal hotspot) is permitted while roaming in our inclusive roaming destinations, so you can use your phone's hotspot feature to share your mobile data connection with other devices.

However, please be aware that when roaming, your data allowance is subject to a 30GB roaming data limit. Once this limit has been reached, further roaming data usage may be restricted or chargeable depending on your plan and roaming terms.

If your hotspot wasn't working during your recent trip, we'd recommend checking the following if it happens again:

    • Make sure Personal Hotspot is enabled on your device.
    • Confirm that mobile data and data roaming are switched on.
    • Restart your phone.
    • Reset your network settings.
    • Check how much roaming data you've used, as reaching the roaming allowance could affect hotspot usage.

    Thanks Gemma,

I checked most of the things on your list but the hotspot toggle on my phone was greyed out for my ID Mobile SIM. Switching to another eSIM brought back the toggle and I was able to tether via that service, but it was disappointing that I had to purchase an eSIM plan when one of the reasons I moved to ID Mobile was my understanding that tethering was permitted in inclusive roaming destinations, as you describe.

Next time I’m abroad I’ll try a network reset and restart and see if it works then. Thanks for your advice and clear confirmation that tethering is permitted while roaming - I think this could certainly be made clearer in contract terms and FAQs. Hopefully this answer will also help others.

    Hi @GRK,

You're very welcome, and thanks for taking the time to come back and share what you found.

It's useful to know that the hotspot toggle was greyed out specifically on the iD Mobile SIM while roaming, and that switching to another eSIM restored the option. Hopefully the network reset and restart will help if you encounter the issue on a future trip.

We also appreciate the feedback regarding the contract terms and FAQs. Thanks for highlighting this, and we're glad that the information may help other Community members who experience something similar.
