Movistar in Spain

Hi all,

I’m in Spain now. My phone connected automatically to Movistar and I got a text saying welcome to Spain and all mins / data etc… is included in Spain as a ‘roam free destination’. Happy days. No worries. I then switched automatic network detection off to see what other options there were. No options, so I get on with it.

I then realise my wife is somehow on Vodafone. I look on the community I see some people saying Movistar isn’t part of roaming in Spain with a link to the list - which quite right, does not include it. Some people saying it used to be part of ID roaming.

I’m not going to be happy if I’ve been charged extra if Spain is a free roaming destination, and it automatically connected me to Movistar, and I got that text from ID making it seem all is well, when there were no other options! Any advice? Is Movistar now back on the list!?

(p.s. since getting into Seville I’ve now managed to find an Orange network)

Many thanks all!

Deej

Hi @Deej-11  our Spanish network partners are Vodafone, Telefonica, Xfera, Orange; so I would advise to connect to one of these networks.

I can’t imagine you would have been charged, but if you have, please let us know.

We hope you have a fab trip!

If it's connected and you're in the EU then no worries. Use your phone freely.

If you’re worried about out of plan charges while roaming, make sure your iD account bill cap is set to £0, @Deej-11.

These community articles might help.

Vodafone is the preferred one but we can also connect to Telefonica and the other name of Telefonica is Movistar. Then Xfera is Yoigo , this is how they appear on the phone, and Orange is the same name. Just FYI.

My phone automatically connected to Movistar but I never got a text saying all mins part of your plan.  Recently finished my 2 year plan and have gone on to monthly sim only which I thought did include roaming.

Two points, does my sim only plan include roaming and are Movistar included in your providers.  A recent response said that they are part of or another name for Telefonica

I believe all iD SIM-only plans include EU roaming as a product feature, @stevematthews1959.

This community article states the iD network partners in Spain are: Vodafone, Telefonica, Xfera, and Orange.

Various online sources say Movistar is a major telecommunications provider owned by Telefónica, operating in Spain and Hispanic American countries - O2 here in the UK is also owned by Telefónica.

Hi, @stevematthews1959

Thank you for getting in touch and for providing those details.

I understand the confusion around roaming and the network connection abroad. To clarify, all iD Mobile SIM-only plans include EU roaming at no extra cost, allowing you to use your data, minutes, and texts just as you would in the UK (subject to fair usage limits).

Movistar is indeed part of Telefónica, which is one of our approved roaming partners. When you travel within the EU, your phone may automatically connect to Movistar or other local networks, depending on signal strength.

If you didn’t receive the usual roaming welcome text, it might be due to local network delays or your phone’s message settings. Please try restarting your phone or toggling airplane mode off and on again to refresh the connection.

If the issue continues, please send us a private message via Facebook, Instagram, Live Chat, our community page, or email us at socialqueries@idmobile.co.uk. Include your iD Mobile number and the country you’re currently in, and we’ll look into it for you.

Thank you,

Zandile
