The Roam Beyond data add-on allows you to use data in countries outside of our 50 inclusive EU roaming destinations. You will need to purchase the relevant add-on for the country you are visiting.

Apps such as WhatsApp and Messenger use data, so they will work as normal once the Roam Beyond data add-on has been activated.

I also learned that a roam beyond add-on is good in only one country, so travellers visiting more than one country need to buy new add-ons as they move from country to country

That’s correct. If you are visiting more than one country and they are not included within our roaming zones, you will need to purchase a separate add-on for each country you visit.

it’s also true that activity on whatsapp and messenger counts as data, rather than text, according to your colleagues in help service 

that will be convenient 

That’s because WhatsApp and messenger use data to send the messages rather than using SMS.
