Question

Cannot get data to reliably work on iPhone which has 2 other active SIMs in it (and needs to keep them)

Hi,

I got an ID Mobile eSIM a couple of weeks ago, and added it to my iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The phone already has 2 other active SIMs in it:
Plan.com eSIM which uses O2 network (my work line), and has its own APN settings.
Lebrara UK  physical SIM (with its own APN settings) which provides a good data signal in one or two areas that are poorly served by other networks. My personal number is associated with this line currently.

I got the ID Mobile eSIM as a potential replacement for the Lebara SIM as my primary personal line (apthough I’d like to keep the lebara one for its coverage in a few black spots).

I am mainly testing the phone in my home, which has a reasonably good signal for all 3 networks - ID mobile shows 2 or 3 bars and 5G data available - phone and SMS work just fine.

On the rare occasion that I can get data to work with the ID mobile eIM, the connection around my home seems to give around 150 Mbps download and about 5 Mbps upload speed.

However, I can very rarely get data to work, or stay working once it connects.

If I have the ID mobile line active and set as the primary data line, and one of the other liines active, generally I get no data - speedtest say I am not connected to the internet and web browsing doesnt happpen.

I can sometimes get data to connect by:
 - Resetting network settings usually does it, but over a period of time the data stops working. I have now reset the nwtork settings a dozen or more times
 - After resetting network settings and data stopping workinig again, sometimes a phone restart will bring it to life for a while
 - On occasion I have found changing the settings on iPhone for mobile data sharing will bring it to life - it generally will not work if the other line has mobile data sharing switched on. But I have found no reliable configuration.

When data is working, often any change in network will stop it working again until I resetnetwork settings (even switching WiFi on and off can do this, as can swtiching whhich liine is the primary data line).

These same symptoms happen when testing elsewhere eg at my work.

And they are also the case when I get data working and have only the ID Mobile line active (no other SIMs active).

I have requested and added a replacement eSIM iin case the issue wass simply with that particular eSIM - but the symptoms remain identical.

I suspect it is related to APN settings but I cant see or change these on the ID Mobile line.

If anyone has experienced this and knows how to resolve it, that would be really appreciated.

Thanks for reading this.

    Hi @G.B,

I’m sorry to hear how much troubleshooting you’ve already had to go through, especially after replacing the eSIM and repeatedly resetting the network settings.

As you’re using multiple SIMs/eSIMs on the iPhone, we’d first recommend making sure the iD Mobile eSIM is set as the primary line for mobile data.

    Please try the following:

    1. Go to Settings > Mobile Service.
    2. Make sure your iD Mobile eSIM is switched ON.
    3. Select Mobile Data and choose your iD Mobile eSIM as the primary data line.
    4. Temporarily switch Allow Mobile Data Switching OFF.
    5. If possible, temporarily disable the other SIM/eSIM lines while testing.
    6. Once this is done, perform another network settings reset:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Once the iPhone restarts, keep the iD Mobile eSIM as the only active line initially and test the mobile data before enabling the other SIMs again.

If the data works reliably with iD Mobile as the only active line but stops once another SIM is enabled, this would help narrow down the cause.

If the issue continues even with iD Mobile set as the primary and only active line, please contact our Live Chat team so this can be investigated further: https://www.idmobile.co.uk/live-chat

    Hi,

    Thanks for the troubleshooting suggestions.

I tried things out a couple of times to remove any outliers.

Resetting network settings with ONY the ID Mobile SIM active did bring data to life.
But the data would drop off after a variable time - overnight on one occasion but also within 15 minutes on another occasion.

Everything LOOKED ok, the signal still showed as 5G at my home, but when I tried to browse some websites internet as not available.

This is the concerning part of it - ID Mobile reports there is a data connection but there is not.
So important alerts etc can be missed.

I hope this is just an issue affecting me, as it might just mean I have to cancel my ID Mobile contract.

I would say, not being able to see APN settings for the ID Mobile SIM is a limitation in troubleshooting the issue.

Potentially this would be a great economical service for people like myself who have multiple SIMs for work or coverage reasons.

    Rgds

    Hi @G.B,

Thank you for the detailed update and for taking the time to test this so thoroughly.

I'm sorry to hear that the issue is still ongoing. The fact that mobile data starts working again after a network reset, but then stops despite the phone still showing a 5G connection, suggests that further investigation is needed.

As you've already completed the troubleshooting and confirmed the issue occurs even when only the iD Mobile SIM is active, we'd recommend contacting our Live Chat team so they can either:

    • Arrange a replacement SIM/eSIM to rule out a provisioning or SIM-related issue.
    • Escalate the issue to our Technical Team for further investigation.

You can contact them here: https://www.idmobile.co.uk/live-chat

When you get in touch, please mention that you've already:

    • Tested with only the iD Mobile SIM active.
    • Performed multiple network resets.
    • Confirmed the issue occurs in multiple locations.
    • Confirmed the data connection appears active but internet access stops working.

This will help avoid repeating the same troubleshooting steps and allow the team to progress the investigation more quickly.
