I've lost my phone and have no insurance but I'm wondering if there's any way of locating the phone without find my iPhone. I've never set up the ID mobile app as I didn't know there was one but I don't know if that shows location anyway. Do I need to contact the police or is phone completely untraceable.

We are sorry to hear about your lost phone! Our app cannot be used to trace a phone, so there's no need to worry there. The best way to find an iPhone is to use the Find My iPhone app, and if this wasn’t set up on your phone beforehand then there isn’t much else that can be done to trace the phone.
You could try and contact your local police to see if an iPhone has been handed in recently.
