Lots of us see January as an opportunity to set goals and fill our calendars with cool events for the year ahead. But it can feel like a sad time for some, especially with those fun Christmas festivities ending and the frostiest winter weather looming.

But don’t fret if you’re feeling a little low. That’s because we’ve put together a list of mood-boosting activities that’ll turn your frown upside down. Plus, we’re giving you the chance to enter our giveaway where you could win a Shark CryoGlow LED Anti-Ageing & Blemish Repair Mask. Read on for all the details and how you can enter!

What is Blue Monday?

‘Blue Monday’ is often referred to as the saddest day of the year — typically falling on the third Monday of January. And believe it or not, it actually started as part of an ad campaign launched by a travel company in 2005. They claimed to have calculated the date using an equation that considered things like weather, days until the next bank holiday, and how long since people have been paid.

Regardless of where and how it started, Blue Monday serves as a reminder to take care of our mental health during the cold winter months. It's a great opportunity to focus on looking after yourself, connecting with loved ones, and finding new ways to lift your spirits through exercise, hobbies, and setting goals. Here are a few of our fave ideas…

Go outside and get some exercise.

Yeah, we know it’s hard to get out of bed when it’s freezing outside. But wrap up warm and push yourself to be more outdoorsy in 2025. Something as simple as a good walk can do wonders for your mental health, especially when the sun’s out.

Or ramp things up with some proper heart-pumping exercise, like running around the park or going for a bike ride. You could even team up with your mates for some five-a-side footie action. That way, you can catch up while being active.

But if it’s just too chilly, how about joining your local gym? According to research from ukactive, 78% of Brits said that going to the gym has had a positive impact on their mental health and wellbeing. Whatever workouts you prefer, any form of exercise is one of the best ways to get that feel-good hit of dopamine!

Relax with an upbeat movie or series.

It might be tempting to tune into the latest crime drama or put on that horror movie everyone’s raving about. But they’re not exactly the best things to watch when you’re trying to feel happier. That’s why you should put on a fun comedy flick or sitcom instead. Laughter is the best medicine after all…

Hot Fuzz, Paddington, Only Fools and Horses — whatever you fancy. And who cares if you’ve seen them all before? Anything that makes you smile or feel some warm and fuzzy nostalgia will help you feel loads better. You can also make things more social by getting your family, friends, or housemates together and watching something you’ll all enjoy. Don’t forget the popcorn.

Treat yourself to some retail therapy.

While you may have received some great gifts at Christmas — nothing beats getting the stuff you really want. And if you’re worried about how much you spent on prezzies for loved ones, we’re sure someone got you a voucher or two. So, why not treat yourself to something special? We’re sure you deserve it.

What’s more, January sales are on everywhere right now. Which means it’s a great time to bag a deal on that swish smartphone or gorgeous pair of shoes you’ve been thinking about. You could even book a short getaway. Then you’ll have something to stick in your calendar and look forward to later in the year.

Escape into a good book.

There’s nothing like a good page-turner. Whether you love escaping into immersive fantasy worlds, learning about history, or fancy taking on a fresh perspective with self-help literature. There are countless books out there to inspire you, expand your knowledge, and help take your mind off things.

According to MHFA England, reading for as little as six minutes every day can lower your stress levels by 60%. Plus, there’s always time to get into a good read. Just find a quiet spot, set your phone to silent, and dive right in. Oh, and make yourself a warm cuppa between chapters.

Catch up with family and friends.

There’s a lot to love about Christmas. From the decorations to the music, prezzies, and of course, the food. But the best thing about the festive period is catching up with our nearest and dearest. Which is why you should keep the conversation going with family and friends into 2025.

Stay connected by calling the people in your life that always make you feel better — even after a quick 5-minute chat. Just a message every couple of days can brighten your mood when you’re feeling down. And with iD Mobile, you’ve got unlimited minutes and texts whatever plan you have. So, there’s no reason not to!

Ask for help if you need it.

Sometimes, it’s not just a simple case of the January blues. It's important to look after your mental health just like your physical health. And if those feelings go on longer or feel more profound — it can take more than talking to family and friends to start feeling positive again.

Groups like CALM and the Samaritans are always there to talk to you and understand what you’re going through. Asking for help can be the hardest step, but it’s the first step to feeling better. Just remember that whoever you are and whatever you’re going through, you’re not alone.

It’s giveaway time…

Apart from being happy every month with how cheap my ID mobile bill is, what makes me happy is working in a school where I get to work with and make a difference to the lives of so many young people.

Seeing my kids smile and gheor funny comments always makes me happy.

I enjoy holidays with my family, catching up with friends. Laughing at silly jokes, and playing board games & quizzes and delighting in the fact the ladies won again over the men.  Coming home to my dog with her wagging tail and her sheer joy at seeing me fills my heart to the brim.. there are so many simple things in life to be joyful for.  Stress is always lurking around but so is joy we just need to look for it and embrace it xx

Meeting up with friends for a good meal with lots of laughter is one of the things I enjoy, plus having family visiting or even going for a walk with friends or family.  This is what makes me happy.

My three dogs make me happy.  They give me unconditional love.  They don’t judge and question me.  They’re the best support and motivation I could ask for in a world that at times can seem hopeless!  I live to do right by them and give back the love they deserve.

A walk through a local forest on a crisp, clear day, stopping, closing my eyes and being completely still. Allowing myself to be calm and listen to the birds and other sounds of nature fills me with a huge sense of happiness.

In life, my happiest moments have always been with friends and family. I currently have two wonderful Grandchildren and seeing how excited they get when they see me is the best feeling in the world. They make me feel young again (and I’d love to to win this mask to help me look young again too)
