How to boost your mood and win big this World Laughter Day!

Laughter is honestly the best medicine. After all, it’s a simple way to boost your mood and is proven to be a powerful stress reliever. Don’t just take our word for it either. An article by the British Heart Foundation explains how laughing helps release endorphins – otherwise known as feel-good hormones. Just a few minutes of mirth can increase the oxygen you take in, lower your heart rate and blood pressure, and help your muscles relax. You can’t argue with that.

And now there’s even more reason to smile…

To celebrate World Laughter Day (on May 4, 2025), we’re giving away a pair of Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Bluetooth Noise-Cancelling Headphones! Whether you’re giggling at your favourite podcast, chuckling over a video call, or just enjoying the peace and quiet between laughs, these headphones are perfect for turning up the joy.

So, if it’s a quick grin or a full-on belly laugh you’re after, here are a few ideas that are bound to give you a giggle – and don’t forget to enter the giveaway while you’re at it!

Video calling friends & family.

This one’s probably the simplest on our list. But it’s arguably the best too. Catching up on a video call with friends and family can always lead to unexpected, spontaneous laughs. Especially when you’re sharing stories and humorous situations from the last few weeks that they might have missed. Grandad’s always fancied himself as a bit of a comedian. And those corny jokes of his always get a groan or two…

You can always try using fun filters as well. Give yourself a funny hat. Make yourself look absolutely ancient. Change the background so you’re on the moon. The options are almost endless now. Most phones (and apps) have at least a few kooky effects you can play about with while you chat. And they’ll definitely make your convo a lot livelier and more enjoyable. So, download FaceTime or Zoom and see what they’ve got to offer.

TikTok & Instagram reels.

Platforms like Insta and TikTok are absolutely stuffed with funny content. From viral challenges to creative skits, there’s always something there that’ll have you howling. If you fancy it (and don’t mind embarrassing yourself a bit), you could always get involved with a few trending challenges yourself. And if your sitcom skills are on point, you can also make your own sketches and share them with the community or the group chat. Who knows, maybe you’ll go viral yourself.

Need some more ideas? Dance challenges are all the rage, especially on TikTok. Pop on your favourite playlist and get your groove on. It doesn’t matter if you move like your uncle after a few drinks at a wedding either. At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun and putting a smile on your – and everyone else’s – face. Make sure to tag your mates and get them involved as well. The more people that take part, the more laughter there’ll be.

YouTube & podcasts.

Podcasts and YouTube videos are full of moments that’ll have you in stitches. There are countless comedy channels and stand-up routines out there that can brighten your day. And they’re not just from established comedians that you’ve seen loads on the telly. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find shows and clips from brilliant up and comers that’ll be selling out the O2 before you know it.

Found a few favourites? You could create a playlist of the best funny vids you’ve found so far. Then when you need a quick pick me up, you’ve got them all in one place, ready to go. Or you could always subscribe to a few comedy pods on your go-to streaming platform. There’s absolutely loads to choose from. Queue one up for your morning commute, and it’ll make that grey Monday morning a lot less gloomy. If you’re anything like us, you’ll probably be sat there struggling to keep a straight face. Laughter’s contagious though – so it might not be the worst thing to cheer up the rest of the carriage!

Remember, a laugh a day keeps the stress away. And it doesn’t cost a thing either. So, whether it’s a video call with the folks, a silly TikTok challenge, or a hilarious podcast, there’s loads of ways to bring more laughter into your life. And remember, that goes for every day of the week too. Not just World Laughter Day!

Sappenin' Podcast with Sean Smith. Although it's mainly a music podcast, it's very funny and never fails to put a smile on my face

There are so many comedy greats, that are no longer with us, who were the best.
Such dry wit and timeless in their humour!

But LES DAWSON!!! He was such a great comedian and was never nasty (except to mother-in-laws and wife) and would ALWAYS put a smile on my face.
Just some examples of the mind of this great man:-

  • I said to the chemist, 'Can I have some sleeping pills for the wife?' He said, 'Why?' I said, 'She keeps waking up.'
  • I upset the wife's mother the other Guy Fawkes Night. I fell off the fire.
  • People often ask me: "What's the difference between a northern audience and a southern audience?" Frankly, as far as I'm concerned there's no difference ... they don't laugh at me in the south either.
  • I saw six men kicking and punching the mother-in-law. My neighbour said 'Are you going to help?' I said 'No, Six should be enough."
  • He drank so heavy, the only thing that grew on his grave were hops
  • I can always tell when the mother in law's coming to stay; the mice throw themselves on the traps.
  • My mother-in-law has come round to our house at Christmas seven years running. This year we're having a change. We're going to let her in.
  • The mother-in-law came round last week. It was absolutely pouring down. So I opened the door and I saw her there and I said, 'Mother, don't just stand there in the rain. Go home.'
  • The wife's run off with the bloke next door. I do miss him.
  • My mother-in-law fell down a wishing well. I was amazed; I never knew they worked.
  • When we were courting, I told my wife: 'I could live in your eyes.' She said: 'You'd be at home; there's a stye in one of them.'

I hope at least one of these put a smile on your face or made you LOL!

The Off Menu podcast by James Acaster and Ed Gamble always makes me laugh. It’s to the point where I’ve been sitting on a train or on a lunch break and struggling not to giggle - hopefully that sight put a smile on other people’s faces too!

I occasionally listening to podcast mainly when I am driving long distance and the radio is full of advert and I have already played all my list, so I came across with "Did that really happened?" Podcast  show, when they are chatting with stand up comedians and they share their stories about what happened behind the scenes and what inspired their jokes. I find it interesting concept and keep me laughing here and there. And give the real life aspects of that artist.  Also I like the accent of the host.

Tik Tok is my guilty pleasure and a great new talent who I’ve come across recently and love is Carissa Hendrix aka Lucy Darling.  She definitely releases my endorphins!

Something that ALWAYS makes me laugh-out-loud, is my all-time favourite radio show (now available as a podcast on BBC Sounds): Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue.

Paddy thinks his new girlfriend is the one for him.
However, after a quick look through her knicker drawer, he reconsiders.
"What made you change your mind?" asks Murphy
"Well" says Paddy "when I looked in her knicker drawer, I found a nurses outfit, a French maids outfit and a police woman's outfit and to be honest, if she can't hold a job down, she ain't the one for me......"
