I would like to use my SIM in a portable router rather than using the hotspot on my phone. DO I need to change the settings?

I should have explained better. I have inserted it into the router and it is not working so I assume that I need to change some setting in the router for this SIM. I have used the router successfully for a couple of years with a SMARTY SIM so I know that it works ok.

@wee shoes - While we can’t guarantee compatibility with portable routers, if a SMARTY SIM worked previously an iD SIM should also work. Do you have the option to factory reset the Portable Router? That may help. Thanks.

I have just purchased a 500gb per month data plan with ID mobile. Working fine in the new handset (iPhone 16 Pro) but when i take the sim out and put into the 4G router it works, but the speeds become unbearably horrifically slow. Around 500kbps download speeds……

Is there any reason for this? With my previous provider (UW/EE) I could interchange from phone to router with no drop in speed whatsoever. I was informed that this should be possible before i purchased the ID plan by the Carphone Warehouse employee.

It would be great if it is possible for this to work with the ID mobile sim?

Thank you

It may be related to 3G being switched off in your area @Rhigg1000x56. You could check this by sticking your postcode in here and toggling between 3G, 4G and 5G:

https://www.three.co.uk/content/experience-fragments/threedigital/uk/en/site/mvno/coverage-checker/idmobile.html

The iPhone probably reverts itself to 4G, or even 5G

If 3G has gone in your area can you force the router to select 4G or 5G?

And a possible reason why it worked on EE is likely due to them still (currently) having 3G.

HTH

edit. I may even be the case that 4G is only good outdoors in your location and thus the iPhones internal antennae could be better than the one(s) in the router. IDK

Hi Dan,

thanks so much for your comment! When I checked the router settings the Network mode options were set to “Auto” and the only other option was “4g only”.
Considering 4g and auto were the only options one would assume it would connect to 4g but after reading your post apparently not!

After changing to 4g only the router is picking up a much better and stronger 4g signal and is totally usable now. Can’t believe it was connecting to 3G. Shocking to see how slow 3G actually is after not having used it for 10+ years haha

thank you!

Ah yes, the auto setting @Rhigg1000x56

It can and does catch us out from time to time.

Anyway, glad to have helped!👍
