data roaming in switzerland

I understand that data roaming in Switzerland is not included in my plan and I will be charged extra for this. This is fine I will only need access to the internet for 5 mins so I check into my flight when I am in Zurich.

I have roaming turned on in my package. I will select the roaming option on my mobile and I have a data cap of £20. Will this mean I will be able to access the internet when I am in Switzerland?

do I need to specially connect to any network? Normally when roaming abroad I will turn my mobile data on and roaming on and that gives me access to the internet.

Yes it should @Zazalajanaka

However, I’d suggest using a free local Wi-Fi network for your travel arrangements while in Switzerland.

£20 buys ~13MB of roaming mobile data - your iD plan probably has a data allowance of several gigabytes (GB) @Zazalajanaka.

If you’ve got a dual SIM handset, with eSIM support maybe think about using a data only eSIM for roaming outside the EU - e.g. Airalo, BreatheSIM, GoMoWorld, etcetera.

iD roaming charges for Switzerland are:

All, I've just found the same thing. If landing in Zurich or Geneva, use the free airport WiFi and search on Google for a swiss e-sim. First check that your phone accepts E-SIMs (most semi modern ones do). E-SIMs allow you to connect to local data networks without having a physical SIM. You can purchase an E-SIM for unlimited internet via sunrise or many other providers online for around £20 or less for a week, depending on your stay. It's A LOT cheaper than using ID charges.

Once purchased, go to phone settings > network > SIM and activate using either the QR code or manually entering the code on the email on the purchased e-sim email.

Hope it helps.

Are there any plans to match most of the other mobile operators in the UK and offer included roaming also for Switzerland?

Many thanks

Hi @IDmanleeds

We don’t have any plans at this time to include Switzerland in our inclusive roaming countries list, sorry.

I can't create a question???, so hoping I'll find an answer on this thread…

I just upgraded with iD, kept my old sim card, have a data cap of 75.00, turned on mobile data and roaming, but despite the 4g sign and the flashing arrows I have no data and keep getting messages "you may be out of data on xxxx" I've tried all the Swiss networks. I have to follow this link http://my.idmobile.co.uk/limit-reached.htm which tells me I'm out of data? Can anybody help?

Please ignore above, I now managed to ask a question...

I also had problems accessing my data when in Switzerland. I carried out all of the steps recommended in various feeds while connecting to WiFi at Geneva airport, but even though my phone showed as having 4G, I was not able to use my data, which was a huge panic as I needed to use the navigation. I was there for a week and did not manage to resolve the issues. How do I use data in Switzerland? Will I have this same issue when I go to Italy later this month?
Thanks, Mallory

Hi @Mallory Gough

Switzerland would cost extra as it isn’t an inclusive roaming zone, was your bill cap high enough to support the charges that would be made?

https://www.idmobile.co.uk/help-and-advice/international-and-roaming-charges

Roaming in Italy would be inclusive to your plan up to 30GB, assuming the issue is what I suspect it could be with your bill cap, Italy would not have the same issue.

Hi @Tom

My bill cap was at £10 - would that be enough to get started?

Thanks

The three countries surrounding Switzerland, France Italy and Germany are all included in Band 1. Why is the tiny country in the middle not included?

Best regards

Neal

@Mallory Gough,

It would dependent on what you are looking to use.

I would advise to check the charges for roaming and add the cap accordingly.

Hi Kash

You did not really answer my question. Why is the tiny country in the middle not included?

My daughter is going to Switzerland on a school trip and we wanted her to keep in contact with us, maybe through data roaming. We are both on Unlimited/Unlimited/Unlimited.

Best regards

Neal

Hi @Nealmob

Kash was not responding to your question in their post.

We couldn’t specifically answer why Switzerland isn’t included while countries that surround it are, with pure speculation you could guess it’s because it’s not a member of the EU.

All we can advise is that it isn’t one of our inclusive zones and usage while connected to one of it’s networks would charge you extra.
