EU ROAMING

I understand that I am allowed up to 30Gb roaming while abroad. Can someone clarify fair usage. I will be in Europe for 3 months. Am I able to use the full 30Gb without being charged extra for 3 months in a row? I have a £0 price cap set, so hopefully this would stop me from going over my allowance

I am in the process of moving from O2 who used to have a similar policy (25Gb/month), and allowed this, however changed this half way through last way through last year to ‘fair usage’ which didn’t allow the 25Gb to be used fully each month. Thank you.

AFAIK toggling Flight/Airplane mode on on any phone knocks off the mobile data (I know Android does). But in flight/airplane mode it knocks the WiFi off too but we can then activate the WiFi again by toggling the WiFi button back on. I sometimes do this for forcing WiFi calling to use just my home router.

(when I wrote earlier that “ data would still work via the wifi” I mean apps that etc would work, calls and texts wouldn’t. But you can still call others using apps etc)

So to confirm NO you just need to toggle flight/airplane mode to on as this should knock the data off. You can ‘practice’ this before you go.

And this could work to your advantage. You mention “we”. So one of you could activate roaming and the other (in flight mode but then with WiFi back on) could tether to the other ones phone. As long as you’re both in range of each other you could soon wrack up enough ‘spare days’ to use over 89 days.

Actually @Kathleen Sutherland depending on where you’re going this currently applies

Use Your Full UK Data Allowance at No Extra Cost!

From 1 October 2024 and until further notice, all customers can use their full UK data allowance in Roam Free destinations*, at no extra cost! We’ll notify you when the promotion ends and when the 30GB Roaming data limit is reinstated. Have a great trip!

(I highlighted the bits in bold)

So you actually have your UK data allowance in full per month.

I will be in Europe for 3 months. Am I able to use the full 30Gb without being charged extra for 3 months in a row?

Their terms state this:

We understand that sometimes you will want to roam abroad for short periods of time. Our Roam Free feature is available to our UK resident customers who travel occasionally, rather than those living abroad. If over a 4-month period you spend 63 days or more in our free roaming destinations, you will be subject to further charges.

If we notice that you might not be following our Fair Usage Policy or if you're using our services in a way that goes against our Terms and Conditions, we might temporarily restrict your account.

We will notify you 14 days before the charges are applied to help you avoid incurring any surprise costs. The additional roaming charges applied to your plan will be:

3.2p per minute per call
1p per text
10p per MB of data

(again highlighted in bold)

I have a £0 price cap set, so hopefully this would stop me from going over my allowance

That should do it. And currently this doesn’t apply, but once the limit goes back to 30GB per month then iD do have a £45 data roaming cap limit - this can be removed at our request via their contact methods.

I did start a topic off regarding our preparation for Europe, the first 13 or so posts may help you too

(ignore the typo spelling for cruise - I must have been too excited!)

Others may clarify the above.

I will be using my data in France, Spain & Portugal for 89 days - this will be almost 3 months continuous. Therefore it will be over the 63 days fair usage - I have a £0 price cap. Will I be stopped on day 64 from making or receiving calls/texts etc. thank you for your patience

This might be worth a try, but only if you don’t need to use the roaming everyday…. Could you not flight/airplane mode the phone for 24 hours as it wouldn’t count that day. Or maybe do this over a period of days - like if you didn’t need to use the phone over the weekend this should give you 2 extra days with this alone.

Or if WiFi is available flight/airplane the phone and then connect to WiFi - data would still work via the wifi.

Interesting. Thank you. We will be travelling a lot, but on campsites some days - they don’t always have workable wifi, but will give this a go. I assume I just turn off mobile data 🤔?
