Google Maps issue

I can't get Google maps to operate properly, says I'm offline when I'm not. Is this an ID issue or Google or my phone? Everything else works perfectly with WiFi or without.

Thanks for getting in touch.

If the issue is only with the one app it would indicate an issue with that itself.

Are both the app and handset up to date with software?

Hi, yes just the Google Map app. It’s the latest download and the phone is also up to date. When I’m outside (away from WiFi and using Google maps) the map appears OK, shows me where I am and can move around but if I want directions (tap ‘start’) it says ‘looks like you’re offline, check your connection’. But I’m connected to the internet and I can access anything/everything wherever I am including abroad - but Google maps says I’m offline. Roaming is on.
