lost connection on my phone

My Samsung s21 stopped connecting this morning, no calls out. Unsure whether my phone is broken, tried taking the sim out and putting in an old Samsung s8 to keep me going, but the id card won’t register on the network. So now I’m unsure whether it is the SIM card or the phone at fault. I change phones so infrequently that I’m unsure if I’m missing a step. Ah! after 10 mins I now have ID on the network, but mobile network state says disconnected and service state says out of service. 
for completeness signal strength is -113dBm 0asu, mobile voice network type and mobile data network type are LTE,

Suggestions?
