According to Opinium, one third of UK holidaymakers have reported a surge in travel scams on social media this year. That means digital security is just as important as packing your passport!

A few smart phone habits can be the difference between a holiday to remember, and a fraud claim you’ll have a hard time forgetting.

The good news? You don’t need to be a tech wizard to stay protected. A little know-how and the right tools go a very long way. The even better news? We’ve done all the research for you. Plus, stick around until the end of this post for a chance to win our latest summer giveaway!

Spot fake public Wi-Fi hotspots.

Free Wi-Fi at the airport or the poolside café sounds like a dream. But it can quickly turn into a nightmare. Fraudsters routinely set up convincing spoofed networks in busy tourist spots (named things like “Airport_Free_WiFi” or “Hotel_Guest”) to trick you into connecting. Once you’re on their network, they can intercept anything you type: bank logins, passwords, and card details.

Before connecting anywhere new, always ask a member of staff for the exact network name. If it looks even slightly off, trust your gut and skip it entirely.

Secure your connection with IPVanish (iD Perks).

This is where iD Mobile has genuinely got your back. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) acts as a digital shield, encrypting your data. So even if you accidentally connect to a dodgy network, criminals can’t read what you’re sending.

Right now, there’s an exclusive iD Perk offering 83% off the IPVanish 2-Year Essential Plan — that’s unlimited simultaneous connections, so the whole family is covered in one go.

Here’s how to claim it:

  1. Open the iD Mobile app and head to the Perks section
  2. Find the IPVanish offer and tap ‘Get offer now’
  3. A unique redemption link will land straight in your inbox

Job done. You’re shielded before you’ve even left the departure lounge.

Watch out for phishing texts and booking scams.

Criminals are increasingly targeting UK tourists before they’ve even landed. You might get a message from a foreign number quoting your real hotel name and claiming your booking is about to be cancelled. Of course, the only way to stop this is to click a link immediately and enter your payment details.

Landing in an unfamiliar place, it can be convincing. It’s designed to panic you. And it absolutely works - unless you know the signs.

The golden rule here is simple: never click links in unexpected messages, however urgent they seem. If you’re genuinely worried about a booking, go directly to the official app or website and log in from there. Legitimate booking platforms will absolutely never ask you for card details over a WhatsApp message.

Outsmart pickpockets and phone thieves.

Physical theft is still one of the biggest threats in European tourist hotspots. Thieves have become especially cunning. Some use a technique called ‘shoulder surfing’  where they watch you enter your PIN before snatching your device. Once they have your phone and your PIN, your banking apps are wide open.

A few quick wins to stop them in their tracks:

  • Switch to biometric logins like Face ID or fingerprint whenever you’re out in public
  • Turn off message preview notifications on your lock screen so bank security codes stay hidden from prying eyes

If your phone is stolen, log into your iD Mobile account from another device straight away to block your SIM. This stops thieves running up fraudulent charges

Roam safely and save with iD Mobile.

Here’s the thing: your own mobile data is genuinely more secure than any public Wi-Fi network. And with iD Mobile, staying on your own trusted connection while abroad is easy on the wallet too.

iD Mobile customers save an average of £86 roaming in the EU compared to networks that charge daily roaming fees*. That’s a serious saving you can spend on something far more enjoyable - like tasting some local delicacies.

So rather than hunting down the hotel Wi-Fi password, you can stick to iD Mobile data. It keeps your personal information private and your holiday budget intact. So, you can relax and enjoy your vacation!

*Average saving of £86.76 against UK networks that charge daily for EU roaming on standard plans (EE, Vodafone, Three, Sky Mobile & Voxi) as of May 2026.

Very useful advice! It's easy to focus on protecting our phones from physical damage while forgetting about digital security. Simple habits like using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, keeping software updated, and staying cautious with suspicious links can make a huge difference. Thanks for sharing these practical tips—they're a great reminder before heading off on holiday.

If you have a family and are in the basque area of southwest France, Base de Pop is a must for active kids who enjoy water action.  Loverly family fun day with option to just relax and sunbathe if the action isn’t your cup of tea.

Don’t bother staying poolside all day, the best beach day is waiting for you a quick stroll away from the hotel’s entrance! Calm sea for snorkeling or waves for playing in, sandy toes and salty skin.

Don’t stick to the main tourist areas but talk to the locals as they will ALWAYS know the hidden gems and you will end up with the best experiences you’ll ever have on any holiday.
The best hidden gem I’ve experienced was when I holidayed in a very old rural village outside of an ‘historic’ city and I was told about a pub hidden well away and only frequented by locals. There was music, laughter and a very warm welcome. During the first night of my holiday I visited the pub and I talked for many hours with the people who lived there and then went back every night afterwards to talk to others. Each night I was invited by a different person to experience their lives in this village and these memories will live with me forever. I learnt the history of the homes I visited and of the people that had lived there throughout time, I was shown and given hands-on experience of crafts and working practices that were passed down through many generations without change. I was guided through hidden natural wonders, had my own private tours of areas of little known natural beauty, I was educated about these areas and the history of them and so much more. I learnt so much from each of the individuals including life lessons and advice, that I still follow to this day.
Did I ‘miss out’ on the main touristy attractions?? Yes, but I can always see pictures and information about these on-line as they are everywhere BUT what I can’t find on-line are the experiences and memories given to me by those that I met and befriended and who were generous enough to take the time to show and teach me the ‘real’ personal history of the area that they bought to life.

For me the best hidden gem is Tenerife island part of Canary Islands. Part of it looks like moon surface and part of it is green and lash like a jungle l. Additionally for kitesurfers, like me, it is one of the best places to do the best sport there is:-)

I went to Lanzarote and apart from the stunning landscapes and beaches, the best hidden gem would be the César Manrique Foundation with the home and artwork of Lanzarote’s most famous artist.  The home is stunning and build into a lava flow, truly awe-inspiring and incredible to see.  Highly recommend this and some other famous casas such as Omar Sharif’s house which is now a restaurant and bar.

Just at nice secure marinas with great facilities where we can sail our boat end stay. Waking up to friendly people and wildlife like ducks and swans and the odd lost otters peaking their heads up.

One of the best hidden gems I’ve discovered on holiday was a little secluded beach tucked away from the main tourist areas. It was so peaceful, with hardly anyone around, and the water was crystal clear. We only found it by chance, which made it feel even more special  definitely one of those places I’d happily keep to myself!

Loutro - a tiny car-free whitewashed seaside village in Crete. You can only get there by boat or by hiking for ages. I’ve been to quite a few places around the world and Loutro is so so special. If you’re ever looking to fully switch off - Loutro is the palce to go.

When travelling with children, I always pack swimming gear in hand luggage. If we arrive before our check-in time, the children can always go for a swim in the pool/beach/lake while we wait. Also useful when bags are misplaced etc. (Not recommended for cooler holiday destinations!)

I usually split our luggage between 3x suitcases, and keep toothbrushes, swimwear and pyjamas in my hand luggage so kids can jump straight in the pool when we arrive! It saves having to worry about lost luggage, or arriving earlier than check-in and going through luggage in a public area!

Conway! Not all holiday hidden gems are overseas. A charming market town with city walls, an impressive castle. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your fish and chips.

Stumbling across a tiny family-run taverna in a quiet Greek village. No signs, no tourists—just incredible homemade food, the warmest hospitality, and the most breathtaking sunset overlooking the sea. It ended up being the highlight of the entire holiday!

My hidden gem is a beautiful part of Majorca on the South West coast called Camp de Mar. I discovered it around 20 years ago. I've holidayed there with my children for many years. Now they have all grown up I'm due to visit for a solo trip in a few months. I cannot wait

Me and a friend got quad bikes in Ibiza and explored the island, we come across a place we never expected secluded from the rest of the island. The view was beautiful and was the highlight of a holiday!

A small inflatable paddling pool for babies/toddlers. Keeps them contained by the pool and in the shade, and then also doubles up as a bath if your room doesn’t have one. Such a great tip and makes travelling with small children so much easier!
