messages to android not working

I am receiving a ‘message not sent’ when using text to android. 
I’ve tried to change my number in settings but it won’t update

Have you tried to login to your Google Account, to check the mobile phones number Google have for your devices are correct, @katelaybourne?

    As @andewhite has kindly suggested, have you tried logging into your Google account to check the correct number shows, or can be changed?
