My iPhone wont start

My iPhone won't start after turning it off the night before. It was fully charged. I tried charging it and force starting it but just a dead screen. I am still in contract. Also, how do I :

  1. Back up your data: Repairs often involve wiping the device. Make sure your photos, contacts, and messages are backed up to the cloud (iCloud for iPhone, Google Drive for Android).
  2. Remove security locks: Turn off 'Find My iPhone' (Apple) or 'Find My Device' (Android) and remove any PINs or passcodes. Technicians can't fix your phone if they can't get into it!
  3. Remove your SIM and Memory Card: Keep these safe with you. You can use your SIM in a spare phone while yours is away.

If the phone is dead and I take it to Curry's??

Hi @William2

Thank you for reaching out.

We’re sorry to hear that your iPhone is no longer turning on, especially as it was fully charged before being switched off. We understand how concerning this can be, particularly while you are still within your contract.

If the handset is completely unresponsive after trying to charge it and force restarting it, we would recommend taking the device to Currys for further inspection, as they will be able to assess the handset and advise on the available repair options.

Please note that we are unable to confirm whether there will be any costs involved, as this will depend on the outcome of the inspection, the fault identified, and whether the issue is covered under the applicable warranty/repair assessment.

Before taking the handset in, if possible, we recommend completing the following:

1. Back up your data
If the handset is still able to turn on:

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap your name at the top
  • Select iCloud
  • Tap iCloud Backup
  • Select Back Up Now

You can also ensure your photos, contacts, and messages are syncing with iCloud.

If the phone is completely dead and will not switch on, unfortunately you may not be able to complete a backup before the repair.

2. Turn off Find My iPhone
If you can access your device:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Select Find My
  4. Tap Find My iPhone
  5. Switch it OFF

You may be asked to enter your Apple ID password.

If the device cannot be switched on, Currys may advise you on the steps needed once they have assessed the handset.

3. Remove your SIM card
If you use a physical SIM:

  • Remove the SIM card before handing the handset over
  • Keep it safe so you can use it in another compatible handset if required

If you use an eSIM, please do not delete it unless advised, as this may require reactivation.

4. Remove passcodes/security locks
If possible:

  • Remove your iPhone passcode
  • Ensure Find My iPhone is disabled before repair

Please note that if the handset cannot power on, some of these steps may not be possible. Currys will be able to advise further once they inspect the device.
