Other ways to connect apple watch

Does anyone know if you can use a different carrier for the Apple Watch cellular but still connect your phone with ID for when on wifi or near the phone.

Okay @Stacey01, the Apple support article https://support.apple.com/en-gb/119601, says your phone and watch must use the same network provider. 

In the UK, currently Apple advise using EE, O2, Three or Vodafone.
