Looking at my recent history of payments, I can see that I've paid 2 extra months in December due to getting a message stating that you struggled to take payment but when looking, it appears all payments have been made. I've been charged again this month as normal despite being in credit, can this be checked please?

So any over payment should put your account into credit and as you’ve said they should be taking that credit first (unless the DD was already going through). I have no explanation either as to why they would send you a message saying they couldn’t take the DD unless you had insufficient funds but they state this:

If your Direct Debit is rejected by your bank, we’ll attempt to take the payment five days later. If the second payment attempt is rejected, the Direct Debit will be cancelled, and we’ll require a manual payment by credit or debit card.
