PAC Code fraud, how long do we have to wait?

Hi

I recently became a victim of PAC fraud. I received a text message detailing my PAC code and I should pass this on to my new provider. I contacted ID mobile via the chat function and was told it was probably an error and to ignore it. Less than 24 hours later I received another text message informing me that my contract was now cancelled and my final balance is £411. Then my mobile phone went to emergency calls only an the only thing I have working is WhatsApp. I contacted ID an they told me my number had been taken and they would attempt to get it back.

In the meantime the scammer has tried to access my bank accounts and tried to set up Paypal credit and Klarna credit using my number. Luckily I was able to block my accounts and I did not respond to the Paypal and Klarna requests for passwords or clicking any links.

I am now 7 days without any signal on my phone and ID just keep telling me that they are working to get my number back from 3 mobile. When am I likely to get my number back and get reconnected? I use my mobile phone for work calls, I am the first point of contact for my elderly grandfathers careline if he has a fall and I am also waiting on some tests results from my doctor. I need my number back urgently. It is making me very anxious that I can not be contacted and a scammer is getting all of my voicemails.

Has someone had this issue? How long did it take to get your number back?

Day 8, still NOTHING!! No replies from my emails, no sign of my number being returned. Seriously? How can it take less than 48 hours for my PAC code to be stolen and my contract cancelled, yet take 8 days to return my number to me.

Not at all happy with ID mobile. I will be changing provider as soon as my contract is due up.

This is all I ever get told, ‘it will take time;. But how much time? Nobody can give me a rough estimate. Surely by the looks of this forum, you are dealing with PAC Fraud all of the time, so you must know roughly how long this is usually taking to resolve?

Day 11. No phone signal, no data, no sign of being any closer to getting my number back.

You have absolutely no idea how stressful this is being unable to make and receive calls. I don’t feel safe to go out at night in case I need to contact someone in an emergency. I still have my bank accounts frozen so that the scammer can not get any one time passcodes sent to my mobile number. I have had to contact my grandfathers careline and ask them to use my husbands contact number should my grandad have a fall and need urgent help, but I am not always with my husband and so he has no way of contacting me if he does get a call from them.

This is a serious issue that needs to be looked into at ID mobile as to how a number can stolen by a scammer so easily without any checks. Surely before you issue a PAC code you should verify it by text message to the customer who at this point will still have their number and be able to confirm if they do want their PAC code to leave. A simple one time passcode text message would stop this. If the scammer can not give you that code, then they clearly do not have access to that number.
