Question

Roaming not working abroad in partner countries

When I am in Europe (in countries which are supposed to have free roaming) I cannot use roaming services. On returning to the UK,  iD say that the problem cannot be diagnosed until it happens abroad! Since by definition I cannot contact them when it occurs abroad, I am in a Catch 22. This has happened in different roaming partner countries on different trips.

I have just got a new SIM card but Currys tell me that there is no guarantee that this will cure the problem. Has anyone else had this problem please?  I am thinking of leaving iD if another provider can give me some guarantee.

Hi @YorkAl,

We're sorry to hear you've been experiencing this issue, especially across multiple trips.

One thing we'd recommend checking when you're abroad is that your phone is set to manually select a network rather than leaving it on Automatic. Sometimes a device will remain connected to a partner network that has limited service, whereas manually selecting another available roaming partner can resolve the issue.

Could you let us know which countries you've experienced this in? That will help us identify which roaming partners were available and whether there are any specific settings or networks we can recommend for future trips.

Hopefully the replacement SIM will help, but we'd be interested to know which destinations have been affected so we can look into this further.

Regards,

Thanks. The most recent countries were France, Spain and Portugal but longer ago in the Canary islands.

I may not be overseas for some time but it is frustrating that I won't know until I do travel and then it's too late.

Hi @YorkAl,

Thanks for letting us know, and we're sorry to hear this has been affecting you across multiple trips.

Before your next trip, we'd recommend checking our roaming page below to see which partner networks are available in the country you're visiting:

Once you've arrived, try manually connecting to one of the listed partner networks. After selecting the network, we'd also recommend performing a network reset on your phone before testing your roaming services again, as this can often help the device register correctly on the local network.

We appreciate how frustrating it is not knowing whether it'll work until you're abroad, but hopefully these steps will help. If you do experience the issue again, let us know which partner network you've connected to and we'll do our best to help.

Regards,
