Can I share my phone data connection with my tablet (Archos 80)? - other than tethering (which would risk massive data used up - although maybe only if somebody else "steals" some of it by connecting using my broadcasted wifi signal - so safe if sure this is v. unlikely, i.e. if far away from strangers.)

Hello @3rdRockStephen,

Welcome to the iD Community.

In relation to tethering, you can find the answer here

Tethering

Tethering is when you use one of your mobile devices (connected to the internet) as a modem for another device - usually a laptop or a Wi-Fi-only tablet.
Tethering price information
Please note that we
do notallow tethering on any of our current plans. If you do use this service it is likely to use up large amounts of your data allowance very quickly, and you will be liable to pay any charge that may occur if you go over your allowance. Please check for updates on our website as this may change in the future.

If you get this to work, you would be using it at your own responsibility.

Since we do not support this, we're not able to provide Technical Support on this.
Let me know if you still have any questions.
