I have received 2 return calls where someone claims my telephone number called them. I have not made any calls and my phone been near me.
Is this a possible scam, if so how can I prevent it.

Sounds like a scam,
So, I also get these unsolicited calls, which now seem to be part of life with a smartphone unfortunately.
The number ranges used for UK mobile numbers are public domain information. Bad actors probably just go through every mobile number in these ranges, hoping to get lucky - and they must do, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing this.
