I have an Xperia 1 (J8110) which I see on the list of compatible phones but I don't have an option for 4g calls. I read elsewhere that the network provider can enable this but I cannot see how.

Have you reset your network settings while the SIM card is inside the Xperia 1?
It’s possible it wouldn’t be a choice per say but would automatically switch between Wi-Fi/4G calls only if the signal isn’t strong enough for regular calls.

Thanks, yes, I rest network settings and also tried setting to 4g/3g/2g (the only option with 4g). Calls don't work, text and data are fine. Strangely if it's on then attempts to call to the phone ring for the caller but not on the phone. If the phone is on airplane mode then calls to the number go to voicemail.
+24The UK Xperia 1 doesn’t support VoLTE.

However as @WelshPaul suggests, if your device doesn’t support VoLTE, you may continue to have issues.
