I'm not due to upgrade for 6 months and happy with my phone but I've quite badly smashed the screen. Not insured. What options do I have?

Hi there
There are some options, but they’re limited.
iD don’t cover a phone that has sustained damage when dropped, but although you say you’re not insured I’d check the type of bank account you have - some bank/building society accounts come with some added insurance (that you may not be aware of) so you might be covered by that.
If you have home contents insurance this also might cover your phone even if it was away from home. However some insurance companies will simply write off the phone and send you a used (but never sold) phone as a direct replacement.
You could take it into Currys and ask them for a quote to replace the screen (obviously tell them you’re an iD Mobile customer) - you probably wouldn’t get a discount but may persuade them to take it on.
You could send it off to a reputable phone repairer* or take into a local phone repairer* - but if you send it away it could take around a week, though I’d have to also say it can take weeks. Depending on how busy the local store is and they have it in stock they might be able to fix it the same day.
* be mindful, some screens actually have 2 parts, one overlaying the other. One gives the image and the other registers touch but on most phones they share the same ribbon cable. Some phone repairers can sell genuine screens whereas others have genuine manufacturer supplied screens. So maybe ask if it can be proven the screen they’re fitting is direct from the manufacturer - some screens sold as genuine are actually a very good Chinese knock-off, that only a trained phone repairer would spot or know about (it has 2 separate ribbon cables). Some have been known to fail not that long after being installed and you could end up paying more than once, though if a repairer offers a full 12 month warranty on the screen then that would be one I’d trust.
