Been for a walk alone the beach in Lincolnshire tonight and received messages about roaming. Charges. This can’t be right can it?

Hi @dfreem12

When in a coastal area you need to be aware if your phone is connecting to a maritime network before use, you can be in the UK and pickup a non-UK network in certain places
Maritime networks use satellite connections, which are more expensive than terrestrial networks.
To avoid unexpected charges, it's recommended to disable data roaming on your device when near the coast and switch to Wi-Fi when available
This happens when your phone connects to a maritime network because it's searching for a cellular signal and automatically connects to the nearest available network, which could be a satellite-based network on a ship or at a port.
Luckily (I hope) you received this text before you incurred any charges for using this network

Hope this helps x

Hey there @dfreem12, sorry to hear this. As kindly advised by @Decembersangel72, sometimes when near the sea, you can connect to the maritime (ships) network, which is chargeable, sorry about that. To avoid this in the future, we’d recommend setting your bill cap to £0.00 or ensuring roaming is turned off.

How much have you been charged please, if you were?

Thanks,

Tyler

Hi Tyler

Thanks for your reply. I have done both now, price cap reduced and roaming off. Looks to be around £6, as soon as I receive the text I switch to airplane mode.
In all the years I’ve had a mobile and been at the coast, this has never happened before so was a shock when it did.
Thanks

Dan
