allowing withheld calls

But I do I know that withheld numbers get through is there anyway to check in settings

All that happens with withheld numbers, is the caller has chosen to hide their number when calling your mobile phone @Lynda M Lynch.

Provided your mobile phone has coverage, calls from any callers choosing to hide the number will still reach your mobile phone.

But I've had hospital appointments not come through because they've used a withheld number 

That seems strange @Lynda M Lynch.

If a caller withholds their number when making a call, the receiver still gets the call but is unable to see the caller’s telephone number - the receiver’s phone usually says withheld number or something similar.

Okay let's see what happens thank you I'll be back if this doesn't work 

It might be an idea to make sure your iD voicemail works.
At least the caller has the option of leaving you a message, if you’ve not got coverage when they call.
