Can I use eSIM to visit Morocco?

Am I able to download an eSIM app to use my ID mobile (iPhone 13 mini) in Morocco? I wondered whether the phone is “locked” by ID to prevent me doing this?

Thanks Tom - I believe I now understand the process but will probably look to buy a Moroccan (physical) SIM once in the country. It seems the costs and coverage are significantly better.

Thank you for confirming the phone is not locked down to ID

Hey there @glynn321, thank you for reaching out.

Usually, we’d advise customers to only activate SIM cards within the UK and to use them in the UK before anywhere else, to limit the chances of any issues arising.

However, I believe with eSIM, you should be able to activate this in Morocco, and should hopefully work fine, whereas, I don’t believe you could for a physical SIM card.

Of course, if you activate it, and it doesn’t work, then you’ll need to receive a new eSIM or physical SIM when back in the UK, but of course if you need/want it activating whilst there, it’s worth a try.

Please also ensure roaming is enabled and bill cap increased to allow usage of calls, data and text in Morocco, otherwise it won’t work no matter what.

Thanks,

Tyler

Thanks Tyler for your prompt response.

I’m looking at “Airalo” as an eSIM appearing to be used in Morocco and other non-roaming countries.

To confirm, my iPhone wouldn’t be locked by ID in some way to prevent this?

Also, can you explain why roaming would have to be enabled for the eSIM to work. The whole point of looking at eSIMs is to avoid potentially monstrous roaming charges whilst over there…

(or. do you mean ensure roaming is activated on the eSIM but not my ID SIM perhaps?)

Thanks in advance

Hi @glynn321

Nope, we wouldn’t lock your device, you should be able to use just about any other SIM (or eSIM) you wish in it.

Our SIM wouldn’t work in a roaming country should roaming not be switched on, it’d work in the UK but not in this case Morocco.

In any case if you wish to avoid charges, the easiest thing to do is set a bill cap.
