esim confusion

I’m on a sim only plan with iD on my iPhone and I have just bought an Apple Pro 13 M4 iPad which has WiFi + Cellular.

How do I set up cellular, do I need to get something from iD?

Thanks in anticipation

Seems like you initially might’ve got a replacement eSIM, for the physical SIM in your iPhone 14, @Biggles2

When the eSIM was activated in your iPad, the physical SIM in your iPhone stopped working.

To use cellular data on your iPad you could:

  1. Connect the iPad to your iPhone.
  2. Or buy another (new) contract/plan to use with your iPad.

Hi @Biggles2,

Welcome to the Community!

We can’t guarantee coverage on an iPad.

We’d only recommend usage of our SIM cards inside our supported devices, usage in another device may see disruptions or more in how the services work.

Have you checked your iPad network settings to set it up?

Thanks Kash, I found out that I needed an Esim for the iPad to work on the network but you can’t have iPad and iPhone connected simultaneously according to Customer Services so I will revert to phone only on the network and tether the iPad via personal hotspot

That seems strange advice, @Biggles2

Although iD don’t officially support their SIM/eSIM products in anything other than a mobile phone, others here have reported using them successfully in mobile broadband routers, cellular iPad devices, Android tablets, etcetera.

What reason exactly was given by iD customer service for being unable to use an iD eSIM plan with your iPad?

Hi Kash,

No reasons given. I have a physical sim in my iPhone 14 and was expecting to get dual operating with my new iPad using an eSIM. They sent me a QR code for the iPad which I loaded and it worked fine but then my iPhone stopped working. It was then that I was told I couldn’t get both working together and I would need to tether as a hotspot from my phone to my iPad so they sent me another QR code for my phone which I duly loaded and the phone started working again however the hotspot feature wasn’t working message saying to contact iD to set up. At this point I lost the will to live so asked them to send me a replacement physical SIM for my phone. I’m not sure I was getting good technical knowledge but I’m baffled.

Hi @Biggles2

Thank you for updating the thread.

What @andewhite  has advised does sound like what could have possibly happened. We cannot send two separate SIM’s for the same plan so by activating a new SIM, you would be disconnecting the original.

Please let us know if you require any further assistance.

Thanks,

Nat

That has cleared up my confusion. I will put a new replacement physical SIM in my phone when it arrives and hotspot tether my iPad when needed. It’s a pity that this wasn’t explained by customer support when they were given all of the above information. Hopefully this will put me back to square one.

Thanks all for your help
