I'm going to go on holiday to Japan, and was planning to get use a new SIM while I was there. I've got a contract phone and was wondering if I would be breaking my contract by replacing and using another SIM before my contract ended.

That’s allowed
Your handset might even be dual-SIM capable, meaning you can use two SIM cards at the same time.
