Hi there. I am already an idmobile customer but I have brought a new phone from mobile.co.uk on a different plan. The question I have is how do I keep my old number. Do I have to cancel my old
plan?

Probably two options
- Return your “mobiles.co.uk” order in the contract cooling off period, then upgrade your existing iD contract from your iD online account.
- Keep the new phone and do a triangle port, to move the number you want to keep to your new iD contract.
A triangle port is a bit of a faff, but you might prefer this instead of a return.
The following steps will be required to complete a triangle port:
- Order a PAYG SIM card from ASDA Mobile, EE, giffgaff, etc.
- Get a PAC for your old iD account.
- After getting your PAYG SIM, submit the PAC from step 2) to a PAYG service provider, which also closes the old iD account.
- Wait a few days and make sure your number was correctly transferred to the PAYG provider.
- Get a PAC from the PAYG service provider.
- Submit the PAC from step 5) to use with your new iD account.

I am in exactly same situation. I have seen replies that it was introduced by OFCOM etc. or nobody does it. Apparently customers need that if there is a lot of posts about it (or even better question is how other companies can offer same phone for 20-30% less :D or even reselling same network deals cheaper than the network itself - you still do the admin stuff ...).
I do understand that mobile networks implemented porting for external networks however from IT point of view this is most likely just database entry matching sim number to phone number? Furthermore similar process already exists (as you do porting in general) so should be quite easy for devs to replicate this… Can’t see any genuine reason not to implement this other than - we can’t be bothered to do anything that would benefit customers.
