we travellled to Greece and i turned off aeroplane mode as we landed. it immediately used my £5 cap and then another £5. my husband sat next to me on the plane with the same phone and sim went straight onto data roaming. Not happy at £10 charge for absolutely nothing

Hi @Caker jo

Do you happen to recall what network you connected to whilst in Greece?

Were you in mainland Greece or on a Greek island?

If you had been connected to a Greek network (Wind Hellas" is usually the best option, then you would have only ever used your standard data allowances as though you were at home.

If you were far out at sea (and connected to a Maritime network) or connected to an Albanian network for any duration, then you would have been charged at the standard rate for that non-EU roaming country (up to your cap at least).

HHi. I think my phone must've tried to connect to a Turkish network. I have travelled all.over and never had this problem before. My husband was next to me on the aeroplane with the same phone and network 🙄

That can be a risky game connecting to networks whilst on a plane @Caker jo as you can very quickly go from being covered by one network to another when close to a border and up in the air.

Rather than having your networks connecting Automatically, it would always be advised to check and ensure you're manually choosing a network in a country you know to be covered with your inclusive roaming.

One other tip would be to set your cap in future to a lower amount (such as zero) as this would then prevent you from doing anything that could cause outside of plan charges.
