Excessive high data usage

The last couple of months I have had to buy an add on as my 1GB allowance wasn't enough. Last night I was advised I had used 80% of the 1GB so I upgraded my package to 8GB. Overnight my usage is showing 2.9GB used and I hadn't used phone. Why is my data going down so quickly when my phone usage is not showing anything excessive.

I apparently used 80% data at 3.10 am then by 5.30 used 100% the over next few minutes also used up my cap allowance too! I was asleep also at these times Looked into the usage on my new phone (10days with id) and I had used 8.16gb on messaging contacted id and they said I can confirm you used all your data had to lodge a complaint they then proceeded to phone and advise turning off data at night 🤷🏼‍♀️ offered me 500gb turned it down and then offered 6gb which I did accept just felt the whole issue was bizarre!
