Callers can't hear me - or I can't hear them. Why?

My iPhone was working perfectly until a few weeks ago.  Then suddenly I could barely hear some callers - or they couldn't hear me.  Tried all the obvious things: checking that the volume is high enough, cleaning microphones, checking not on airplane mode … still the same problems.  I can, however,  hear people (and they can hear me) if I use speakerphone.

Today, I had my phone checked at an Apple Genius Bar.  I was informed that my phone was in perfect working order (it’s only a few months old and still under guarantee) - and that I should maybe check for any problems with my network.   However, as far as I can see, iD mobile hasn't had any outages. And,  in any case, why would this sometimes result in me hearing the other person but them not hearing me - or vice versa?

Any advice or insight appreciated.

Sorry to hear this, does the issue with people being unable to hear you (or you being unable to hear them) happen everywhere or just certain locations?

It has happened in a few locations - at home and in the city centre.

It is haphazard - not location related.  Sometimes it is fine at home, sometimes not. Same for external locations.  This is why the assistant at the Apple Genius Bar thought it was related to service provider outage - or something related to this. However, I still don’t understand how this would affect only one end of the call (caller or listener - not both).

Yes, I’ll try that if it continues.  Has been okay today.  Next time it happens I’ll contact them.
