I pay £7 per month for my plan which I thought included data roaming whilst on holiday in Europe but that wasn’t the case because I was unable to send or receive calls. Does this mean I’ll have to buy additional ability for me to use data roaming whilst in the Mediterranean next week ?

Where did you go in Europe please?
For roaming in the Mediterranean, you’ll need to increase your bill cap via the iD Mobile app/website, to allow for charges to go through:
