Question

Is ID coverage throttled?

Both my wife and I have moved to ID. I have come from Vodafone, and her from Three. We both struggle to get ANY data when in busy areas, e.g. shopping centres in Newcastle and Manchester. We both show some bars of 4G or 5G yet data just doesn’t work. It feels like the signal is there but our sim cards have a QoS setting which is blocking our data. It’s so bad that when I go to park the car and try to pay via PayByPhone, I have to leave the shopping centre and walk a street away to get some bandwidth! Has anyone else noticed something similar?

Hey there @AllanMB, sorry to hear that. What’s the full postcode(s) you’re having issues in please, and what device(s) do you have?

Thanks,

Tyler

Just to add. I am using a Samsung S24 Ultra and have tried closing all background apps. My wife is on an iPhone 16 and again has tried closing all background apps.

The main place I see the issue is around Eldon Square shopping center in Newcastle, NE1 7JB, but it also affects the roads immedialtey around the shopping center.

Hi there @AllanMB, there is, at times, heavy usage in this local area.

As a result, you may experience varying data speeds depending on how many customers are connecting to our network via your closest mast.

We’re always working to improve our network and aim to provide the best experience possible.

See below for other factors that may affect your signal.

https://www.three.co.uk/support/network-and-coverage/coverage?location=dh44ar&tab=2#tabs-c2d0d12ce8-item-2988999184-tab

Therefore, being indoors in a busy area such as a shopping centre as per your examples, there may at times be lower signal/data speeds because of this. Sorry about that @AllanMB.

Kind regards,

Tyler

That is to be expected, however I almost always get ZERO bandwidth even though my signal is relatively strong. With our previous networks, that was never an issue. They may have been slower than normal but we were always able to get some bandwidth. I’m not requiring heavy bandwidth to stream videos or anything, but even very low data usage, like WhatsApp messages do not get sent/received

Hey there @AllanMB, sorry to hear that. Next time you’re in these area(s), if possible, please do a speed test and let us know the speed(s) you’re getting so we can look into those further for you. Sorry however if you're unable to do so with the signal you have.

I’d also recommend restarting your phone and resetting network settings when you’re having issues, to see if this helps.

Does it affect calls and texts at all whilst you’re there?

Thanks,

Tyler

I can try a speed test, but I am pretty sure it will just fail to connect. I have tried using my Google Pixel 6 Pro, resetting the phone. Turning on aeroplane mode and off again. Similar for my wifes phone. It really does not seem to be an issue with the handsets or sims.

Regular cellular calls work fine

Thank you @AllanMB please do let us know how you get on with the speed test.

Please also try the manual network reset via the handset settings.

Hi,

Just adding to the thread. Im in Birmingham and I also find that certain roads and areas do not have any range at all. As mentioned by the author, me too, when I was with o2 and virgin media previously, I had no issues whatsoever with not getting any data or calls breaking up. At home the data and calls work fine, but when i need it, when im out and about, it fails. Any help would be appreciated. And also as mentioned by the author, running a speed test would be fruitless as there is no signal at that time. For me it either works or it completely doesn't.

Hello @RyanKhan

We are sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with the service.

Can you please provide a postcode for the areas where you experience the problems?
