my Son is travelling to America in September with the school, what plan would he need for the time he is away as we do not want expensive bills when he returns , or if he is in WIFI Area can he use whatsapp on message and phone and all is ok , or do we need to add a plan to his account

If your son has an eSIM capable handset, maybe buy a data-only eSIM with a travel plan for the USA.
