Poor Signal, prefer 4G

Hi all,

According to the Coverage Checker, I have the following coverage

  • 3G: Indoor & Outdoor
  • 4G: Indoor & Outdoor
  • 5G: Outdoor only

I thought 3G had been decommissioned …

My voice call quality is awful. Although the connection holds I am told that my voice ‘blanks’ for long periods of time, meaning that it’s futile to make voice calls over iD’s network from here.

I suspect that my iPhone is preferring 5G, so I want it to prefer 4G instead.

I found this article in the Apple Community forum but there’s no such option on my phone.

Is there any way to force 4G only?

Thanks,
---
Steven

Thank you for your reply @AnthillMob

Can you please try the following?

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Mobile. 2. Tap Mobile Data Options. 3. Tap Voice & Data. 4. Tap 4G to keep 5G turned off all of the time

Have you tried looking in settings - mobile service  - SIM - Voice & Data

I can choose 5G AUTO, 5G ON or 4G.

Also have you considered using Wi-Fi calling to make calls?

You can enable that in the same menu.

Hello @AnthillMob

Thank you for getting touch.

The 3G switch off is an ongoing process up and down the country so your area may have not been deactivated yet.

From the link, I see you are using an Apple phone, which model please?

Thanks,

Natalie

Thanks for your reply MZone.

You have an iPhone? My previous phone was an S21 and I remember a similar menu option there.

Right now on my iPhone I have the following menu:

Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options > Data Mode

Within that I have

  • Allow more data on 5G
  • Standard (checked)
  • Low Data Mode

At the moment my work around is:

  • I have used Shortcuts to switch on Flight Mode, then switch on WiFi, when I am at home (when I connect to my home WiFi network), thus the phone uses WiFi calling.
  • I have a second automation that reverses it when my phone’s location is away from my home.

But surely I can use the phone for making a voice call? After all, that is the basic function of the original design of a phone!

Thanks for your reply Natalie, I have an iPhone 16.

Perhaps the update I gave to MZone might also be relevant.

I have a 16 pro max and have an option called voice & data in the same menu. Are you on the latest iOS? I’m also using eSIM so not sure if that makes a difference.

You should also have the option for Wi-Fi calling?

Switch it on if you have it switched off - if it’s on already try switching off and see if that makes a difference when making calls.

Hi again MZone,

I was using the WiFi calling work around above, and when I switched off Flight Mode the menu option you mentioned appeared, so I picked 4G. I made a test call - about fifteen minutes long - and it was perfect, neither the call nor the voice dropped.

Next step - can I use Shortcuts to automate it …

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help Natalie, this option worked over a fifteen minute voice call, with WiFi calling switched off.
