Hi for some months now my numbers been spoofed, i did put a message on the answer advising of this and if they got a call from my number to ignore it, then i switched my phone to only call numbers in my contacts, which makes it a little awkward, ive turned off the recorded message advising my numbers been spoofed, thinking by using the call only contacts option would stop it, but today i got three calls from a Indian guy who wanted to talk about his bank account, so it appears after months they are still using my number, i tried to report to the Fraud Action Line but they say they don't deal with spoofed numbers, only if money is being taken from my account, they wouldn't supply a crime reference, So im going to need to change my number before someone gets scammed using the number i have currently

Spoofing isn’t limited to mobile numbers; any telephone number can be spoofed. It’s not a system fault, and no one is fiddling with iD Mobiles’ system. You need to educate yourself about spoofing and how it’s achieved. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you or any of the UK telecom companies can do to prevent it.

Hi @Haydn5454,

Welcome to the Community!

Unfortunately we are unable to stop the calls but we can help with changing the number for you.

The link will provide some further information regarding spoofing. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/scam-calls-and-messages/phone-spoof-scam

If you have a Crime Reference Number number changes are free or £25 without.

Please let us know how you wish to proceed and we can PM you.

Kash

I think its unfair that i have to pay, this is a clear breach of my personal details that are being used to facilitate a fraud and i’m being made to pay, Spoofing is not a new concept and Mobile companies should do more to prevent it, making me pay for what is essentially a system fault/ failure with no customer protection especially as i have this account with you and an unlimited account for my mobile home, i feel you are holding me to ransom against fraudsters, fiddling your phone system, its easy to say you cant do anything and make me pay, are you sure someone in the ID workforce isnt involved, as your certainly profiting from my misfortune ?

Hi @Haydn5454

As @WelshPaul suggests, I believe you are mistaken on what this is and how it happens.

1. It’s a scammer trying to scam you. Nobody from iD Mobile has reached out to you. You would have discovered this yourself if you had used the forum search feature to search Irene Morgan.

2. Yes, you need to educate yourself because you’re making comments and accusations about something you don’t have technical knowledge about. Ofcom only has a say in the UK telecoms industry and can’t control what happens outside the UK. I won’t explain the technical aspects of number spoofing here because scammers are actively looking to scam iD Mobile customers via this community, and I don’t want to help them in any way.

3. What I can tell you is that the person spoofing your number is likely abroad, using a SIP client and a foreign ITSP to make such calls. In fact, I can make a call right now using your number (if I knew it) as my CLI. I can even make a call that appears to be coming from 999.

4. I’m a customer just like you, I don’t work for iD Mobile. However, I do have over 20 years of experience working in telecommunications, primarily in VoIP.

Spoofing a number isn’t a crime, which is why you’ve been refused a crime reference number. However, if someone called you while spoofing your bank’s official phone number and convinced you to transfer £10,000 to someone in India, that would be a crime. The crime would be fraud because they misled you into sending them money under false pretence, not the number spoofing itself.

While you can change your number, it’s likely only a matter of time before it’s spoofed too. It’s unfortunate, but it seems like this is a problem that won’t change anytime soon.
