I have tried to activate a replacement sim and install it in a replacement phone but there is still no signal after 12 hours

I have activated and installed a replacement sim into my spare phone, which was previously used with three network.This was done over 12 hours ago and i still am not on the network. Could it be that the phone is locked or a faulty sim card?I have tried being patient, turning the phone on and off and putting airplane mode on and off and have now run out of ideas? help please
