i have been given a sim card at currys and would like to like to activate it for a data only for internet access on a boat i have a sim modem but would like to know how this works

If you bought a pay monthly iD SIM, it’s already activated and ready to use in the mobile broadband router on your boat,
Just to say, iD only officially support use of their SIM products in mobile phones, so if things don’t work your support options might be limited.

To activate a SIM card, we’d recommend the following;
https://my.idmobile.co.uk/activate-sim-outside
If you purchased a new plan and that’s your first SIM, it’ll already be activated.
As for using it in a boat we wouldn’t officially support usage of our SIM inside a boat, however you’re free to try if you wish, services may not work or features may be limited.
